BIKE THE BRONX
MESSAGE FROM BRONX BOROUGH PRESIDENT CARRION
If ever there was a time to make the Bronx and all of New York City a friendlier place for bicycling, it is now. The increased cost of owning and keeping up a car have become a heavy financial burden on many Bronx residents. Regular bicycle riding can significantly reduce these costs. It also reduces air pollution from cars and provides exercise. I have started several initiatives to encourage bike ridership like, Tour de Bronx. Today, I am announcing a new initiative called, “Bike The Bronx” to increase the number of bike riders in The Bronx by increasing the number of bicycle parking rack spaces. We are setting ambitious but feasible and beneficial goals to make our great city more environmentally sustainable. Encouraging bicycling as a transportation alternative is a significant part of those goals. And we know that the installation of bike racks is a cost-effective way to increase bike ridership.
REQUEST A BICYCLE RACK!
You can help your community save money, reduce air pollution, reduce traffic and stay healthier by increasing the number bicycle riders. I am calling on you, Bronx residents, to request more bicycle racks from the DOT. Through the CITYRACKS program, the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) is working to install bike racks around the city. But they need your help. Please fill our online form to request a bicycle rack. We will send this information to DOT and follow up with them to ensure the needs of The Bronx are being met. Note, not all requests can be met. However, DOT will try its best to install bicycle racks in places that are requested by people, businesses, organizations or community boards.

BICYCLE RACK INSTALLATION GUIDELINES
There is a need for more bicycle racks throughout the borough. They are needed near where people work, shop and where residents connect with buses and subways. Below are some guidelines to keep in mind when requesting a bicycle rack.
- The rack must be on city-owned property
- The sidewalk should be wide and made of concrete (minimum sidewalk width 12 feet);
- The location should be removed from the natural flow of pedestrians, usually at the curb and always away from crosswalks;
- The location should be a minimum of 6 feet from other street furniture (e.g., street signs, mailboxes, benches, telephones);
- Greater distances are needed from certain features (e.g., up to 13 feet from fire hydrants, and 15 feet from bus stop shelters and newsstands);
- CityRacks can NOT be installed on pavers, cobblestone, brick, stone/slate slabs, custom/patterned concrete or metal grating.
